The Rising Popularity of Nunchucks in the USA

What are Nunchucks?

The Nunchucks, sometimes called nunchaku, is a martial arts equipment made famous by Bruce Lee. It’s a weapon comprising of a couple of sticks joined at one end using a rope or a chain. The two sticks are usually made of wood while a metal chain or a chord is used for connecting them. A traditional weapon, the popularity of which is actually making a huge comeback. Surprisingly, this Okinawan weapon has gained maximum fame in the United States.

The Enhanced Popularity of Nunchucks in the USA

Now, you don’t expect a nunchaku to be a top weaponry choice of the Americans. But, guess what, it has been used for cosplay (mainly replicating the acts of Bruce Lee), a training weapon for practicing martial arts, and for performing tricks. I have seen young people performing certain tricks with nunchucks to impress their fellows. However, what surprised me the most, or will even amaze you, is the use of nunchucks by the California Police. Yes, you read it right.

The Use of Nunchucks by the California Police Agency

A Californian Police agency has been utilizing nunchucks for subduing suspects more safely. Not the entire police, but a small department has adopted this weapon, but not as a striking weapon like Bruce Lee.

This act by this police department did become slightly controversial, but it’s the enhanced popularity of nunchaku in the USA that influenced them to resurrect this weapon. I am not sure what’s the main reason behind the resurrection, but it has been disclosed by some security officers that police will use the nunchaku as a clamping tool for pinching the wrist or legs of the suspects. Nunchucks are not the non-lethal weapons, rather they can cause severe pain. Hence, the suspects after suffering from serious pain would surrender to the arresting officers.

Primarily, nunchaku is not a striking weapon, it is rather a grappling tool. You can put them as chop sticks for applying pain. To your surprise, police were using nunchucks by the early 2000’s, but the introduction of Taser replaced them. A Taser is a small sort of Stun Gun which uses an electrical jolt for sending the suspects to the ground. Another reason for this replacement was the injuries caused by the nunchucks. Several wrists were reported for severe injuries, so stun guns became a better alternative. However, nunchucks have again become a popular choice for the police offers, specifically in the United States.

What can we expect in the future?

As we are analyzing the popularity of the nunchucks in the USA, their use by the police comes up as a surprise. It happens most often around the world that something gradually becomes a trend and then transforms into a necessity. So, we can expect the other departments to adopt this amazing weapon as a non-lethal option for arresting the suspects. What if the armed forces make the use of nunchaku necessary for the officers? I believe that it is a good idea. Some of you may disagree, but I would suggest to do so because of its effectiveness in arresting the defiant suspects.
